Tokio Hotel is a band that needs no introduction. Still, if you haven’t heard of them, all you need to know is that they’re the biggest German band rockin’ the world!

Bill and Tom Kaulitz, Georg Listing and Gustav Schäfer had an amazing 2008. They toured all over Europe and had their big debut in the USA with their English album, Scream.

They conquered the world and have one of the strongest fan bases ever. They’ve won awards, one after the other, from the German VIVA Comet, through the MTV EMAs and VMAs, to the Latin Los Premios.

Being the hard working band they are, the guys started writing for their new album while they were still touring. Bill Kaulitz, the lead singer, used to come up with ideas for the lyrics very often. With such an enthusiastic will to write, the band announced the album release to November 08. But unfortunately, that didn’t happen. The boys were still in the studio, in Hamburg, working on it.

Maybe trying to shorten the wait and make it less ”painful” for the fans, the band released a DVD on Christmas, entitled “Tokio Hotel TV – Caught on Camera”, featuring a documentary with backstage scenes and an interview, where they also talked about the upcoming album. The DVD was a huge success and reached the tops in every country, “bestseller” it was called.

Back to the album, and for the first time, Tokio Hotel recorded and produced some songs in the USA, working with the producers’ team, The Matrix. They described the songs as “strong, anthem-y”, with a dark edge and “lots of guitars.” The team already worked with artists like Avril Lavigne, Britney Spears, Katy Perry and Korn, and they said that Tokio Hotel had a really strong personality and that “the music business really needs Tokio Hotel right now. They’re reviving that image of what a rock star is. … Their writing has developed massively, and we’re experimenting a bit with some Depeche Mode influence. … It doesn’t sound like anything else out there right now. People don’t want to hear a bunch of 808s and Auto-Tuned vocals. They want the real stuff.”

With this, the fans couldn’t be more fervent for the new album!

June became the new deadline. As Bill and his twin brother, Tom, kept having ideas and writing songs, the album took longer to be finished, “If Bill doesn’t have any more ideas for songs we’ll finish the production in the next six weeks. But last week, Bill and Tom came up with two new songs”, said the manager, David Jost.

In the meanwhile, the twins decided to make some changes regarding their looks, and they surprised everybody! Bill, known as one of the most flamboyant stars due to his spiked-up hair, was the first one showing off a new hairstyle: dreadlocks. In the beginning it might have been a bit weird, because it was really different from what people were used to, but in the end, there’s nothing that wouldn’t fit perfectly on him.

His first official appearance happened when the band decided to daze the fans with their debut in the fashion world. H&M, a well known clothing brand around the world, was launching its yearly campaign against AIDS entitled Fashion Against AIDS. Each year it’s asked to a group of artists to design a piece of clothing for the collection, whose 25% of the profits are donated to projects that increase awareness regarding the HIV/AIDS among the youth. And this year, Tokio Hotel was invited! The band designed a t-shirt with the saying “Rock Hard, **** Safe”. The fans took over the H&Ms where it was available, and the t-shirts quickly sold out!

Back to the boys’ looks, it was now time for Tom to show something new. Tom decided to get rid of his so beloved dreadlocks, and swapped them for braids, Snoop Dog style. Also, the almost head-glued cap was gone.

The hairstyle was one of the many changes. The boys were all grown up and re-invented themselves.

Continuing with the album, Tom started writing his own blog on their official website, where he would post about random things he’d find interesting, and also [of course] TH related. Making the day brighter and happier, he decided to announce the title of the so awaited album: Humanoid. According to David Jost [the manager], “Bill Kaulitz named the album because he was inspired by Sci-Fi. The word is written the same way in English and German, and Bill wanted the title to be the same on the international release of the album, on October 6th.”

Following some discussion between the Kaulitz twins, Humanoid’s tracklist was ready. The title of the album has been announced, and only the first single was missing. After the edition of its snippets (both versions, English and German), the wait for the full versions wouldn’t be long. The fans were crazy; it almost felt like they could breathe again. The music was electric and the lyrics were emotional and catching. Bill, Tom, Georg and Gustav came up with a single called by many as epic.

In the meantime, Tokio Hotel performed in Cologne, Germany, for the first time since its last tour. They played an acoustic concert, featuring “Automatic”, which also included an autograph session for an exclusive amount of fans.

Later on September 3rd, it was celebration time again! The so expected video was out and it was incredible! The band travelled all the way from Germany to South Africa, to shoot in the desert under the direction of Craig Wessels. The video, inspired by robotics and Sci-Fi, features helicopters and fast cars, and the foursome couldn’t look better! Bill said that “Shooting Automatic for three days, in the desert, was a great adventure! It was in the middle of nowhere in Africa – no cell phones, no internet, no TV. I’ve never felt so good after leaving a shooting spot. I knew that everything was fine since the beginning. When I first read the script for the video, I knew exactly that it was how I’ve always imagined our song ‘Automatic’.”

Tokio Hotel already started its promotion tour in Europe, and soon they’ll be rockin’ the stages!

I can understand why trying to get this album is a little frustrating. Best Buy and their lack of information is annoying the hell outta me. I want the special edition one that comes with the bonus German disc, but they don’t have the tracks listed. Hell, they don’t even have a picture of the album cover posted. They only have three versions posted with the album title, and the only visible difference is the price. It’s totally ridiculous. So I contacted customer service and the guy said the one for $16.99 is the special edition one, but later on I find out it’s the $13.99 one. I’m going to store to make sense of it all, and they better have the special edition one in stock.
